Quality Magazine, a leading publication for quality assurance and nondestructive testing in manufacturing, has published an article by Vibrant VP of Operations, Greg Weaver. The article, titled “Resonance Testing for Material Analysis,” highlights the material characterization capabilities of Resonance Ultrasound Spectroscopy (RUS). Among the capabilities are determination of engineering material properties like elastic moduli and Poisson’s Ratio from resonance frequencies and correlation to mechanical test data, allowing nondestructive evaluation of a part’s mechanical performance.

“Some of the many applications are validating new alloy properties, confirming the manufacturing consistency of material properties, and estimating the “effective modulus” in fatigued or porous samples,” says Weaver. “After some initial correlation studies… …[resonance] frequencies can be used to predict the tensile strength of a sample.”
